ABOUT THE AUTHOR & HIS BIKES

HELLO EVERYONE.
WOW, MOUNTAIN BIKING HAS REALLY CHANGED OVER THE YEARS!
A WEEK AGO I WANTED TO CHECK OUT SOME NEW BIKES AT SOME OF MY LOCAL BIKE SHOPS.I WANTED TO SHOP AROUND FOR A DECENT FULL SUSPENSION BIKE THAT COULD CLIMB AND SPRINT LIKE A HARDTAIL BUT WEIGH UNDER TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS. I'M A STRONG SPRINTER AND CLIMBER AND HARDTAILS & RIGIDS ARE THE TYPES OF BIKES I PREFER. I WANTED A  DUALLY THAT CAN FINALLY SPRINT WITHOUT THAT BOBBING AND WEIGH IN AT NEARLY A TON AND SOME SUPER BURRITOS. THE PRICES OF THE NEW BIKES GAVE ME A LITTLE STICKER SHOCK. BIKES UP TO $4999.99 MADE MY FAMILY JEWELS SHRINK IN FEAR. NOT TO SOUND LIKE A RETRO GROUCH OR ANYTHING BUT I REALLY CAN'T JUSTIFY PAYING THAT MUCH FOR A BIKE.WHO CAN AND WHY? SOME SAY IF YOU LOVE YOUR SPORT,YOU'D GET THE BEST.THAT'S TRUE I GUESS BUT IF I SPENT THAT KIND OF MONEY,THAT BIKE WOULD HAVE TO GIVE ME MULTIPLE ORGASMS...AND I'M A GUY!
TOO MANY TIMES I'VE SEEN A GUY DROP BIG CASH ON A BIG-HIT BIKE,SPEC'D HIGH-END PARTS,RIDE DOWN A HILL A COUPLE OF TIMES,POST A PHOTO ON MTBREVIEW.COM,TALK TRASH ABOUT SOMEONE ELSES BIKE HIDING BEHIND THE SAFETY OF A COMPUTER SCREEN AND THEN HE DECIDES TO SELL THE BIKE 'SO HE CAN HAVE MONEY 'FOR COLLEGE'.
CAN YOU SAY 'POSER'?

BACK IN THE DAY I SPENT BIG BUCKS ON NEW PARTS SO I CAN GO A LITTLE FASTER THAN THE OTHER GUY.MY BIKES WERE NEVER BUILT FOR SHOW.
DURING THE FIRST HALF OF 1991 I DECIDED IT WAS TIME FOR ME TO GO BIG,MEANING IT WAS TIME TO SPEND SOME DOUGH ON A PRO LEVEL MOUNTAIN BIKE THAT I COULD RACE LOCALLY. I HAD FINALLY MASTERED CLIMBING AND I LEARNED HOW TO TRAIN RIGHT SO I CAN HAVE THE ENDURANCE AND SPEED FOR A 3 LAP X-COUNTRY RACE AND I WANTED A BIKE THAT COULD COMPETE WITH THE BIG GUYS. I WANTED THE RITCHEY P-23.OH,WHAT A BITCHIN' BIKE THAT WAS. 23lbs OF RED WHITE AND BLUE.DON MYRA RACED THIS BIKE AND WON MANY RACES.THE BIKE WAS DISPLAYED AT A LOCAL TECH MUSEUM SOME YEARS LATER. THE PRICE OF THE THEN NEW P-23 WAS NEARLY $2000.00 ! IT WAS SAID TO LAST ONLY 1 SEASON SO I HAD TO SKIP IT. NEXT IT WAS THE BRIDGESTONE MB-0 OR 'ZIP'. AGAIN IT WAS OUT OF MY REACH.WHAT TO DO. FINALLY I FOUND A VERY SWEET 1991 BRIDGESTONE MB-1. RITCHEY PRESTIGE  TUBING AND COMPONENTS,SUNTOUR XC PRO AND A COOL FLAT BATTLESHIP GRAY AND PEARL WHITE PAINT JOB AND IT WAS LIGHTWEIGHT TOO. IT WAS  A POOR-MAN'S RITCHEY. THE COST; $1099.99. IT WAS MY FIRST OVER-ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR BIKE AND IT RODE LIKE ONE. OF COURSE I HAD TO PUT A LARGE DOWN PAYMENT AND MAKE A FEW MONTHLY PAYMENTS UNTIL I ACTUALLY BROUGHT IT HOME. THAT DAY I RODE THE MB-1 HOME 15 MILES AND RODE SOME MORE AFTER DINNER. THAT BIKE HAD QUICK HANDLING THAT SPOOKED ME AT FIRST BUT I QUICKLY LEARNED HOW TO RIDE THAT THING AND IT SOON FOUND A PLACE IN MY HEART AS ONE OF THE BEST BIKES I'VE EVER OWNED AND RIDDEN.NOT EVEN THE KLEIN ATTITUDE COULD KEEP UP WITH THIS THING. AT THE TIME,I HAD 4 OTHER MOUNTAIN BIKES,INCLUDING A RARE DAVE TESCH BUILT 1988 SPECIALIZED STUMPJUMPER TEAM IN THE TEAM COLORS OF BLUE AND WHITE THAT I BOUGHT USED FROM A FRIEND.THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE 250 BUILT BUT I GUESS THE DEAL BETWEEN TESCH AND SPECIALIZED SOURED AND LESS THAN 80 WERE ACTUALLY BUILT. I ALSO HAD 2 TRACK BIKES,A PEUGEOT ROADBIKE AND A COUPLE OF TIME TRAIL BIKES WITH THOSE CRAZY 24" FRONT WHEELS AND BULL HORN HANDLEBARS. I JUST LOVED TO RIDE AND RACE BACK THEN.
I DECIDED TO DROP CARS AND COMMUTED TO WORK FOR MANY YEARS.I RODE TO THE LOCAL RACES OR HITCHED RIDES WITH MY BUDDIES AND THEIR BIKES STUFFED INSIDE A CHEVY UTILITY VAN .I DROPPED 70 POUNDS AND I COULD STILL EAT A WHOLE LARGE PEPPERONNI PIZZA AND A COUPLE OF COLD ONES. I ONLY MET ONE GIRL WHILE RIDING A BIKE. I'VE RIDDEN OVER A MILLION MILES.
I HAD THE MB-1 FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS BEFORE IT WAS STOLEN IN 1993,IT PICKED-UP A DENT ON THE TOPTUBE,LOTS OF SCRATCHES,GONE THROUGH SOME NEW TIRES AND I TOSSED THE SAN MARCOS SADDLE AND DROPPED A FEW DOLLARS FOR A SELLA FLITE SADDLE. THE PAINT WAS FADED AND THE BIKE WAS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A REPAINT AT CYCLART. I WAS PRETTY BUMMED OUT ABOUT THE THEFT OF MY BABY. IT'S STILL MY BABY AND IF I EVER FIND THE BIKE I'M GONNA KICK SOME ASS.
SINCE THE MB-1 ,BRIDGESTONE DISAPPEARED AND THEIR BIKES PRETTY MUCH KEEP THEIR ORIGINAL VALUE ON EBAY. THESE DAYS THE MOUNTAIN BIKE IS PRETTY MUCH A MOTORCYCLE WITHOUT A MOTOR. HUGE AMOUNTS OF TRAVEL AND EVEN BIGGER TIRES AND THE ABILITY TO DROP TWENTY FEET MAKES THESE NEW RIGS AMAZING. STILL.$4000.00 FOR A BIKE IS CRAZY. HOPEFULLY THE PRICES WILL DROP AND THE TECHNOLOGY WILL MAKE IT'S WAY TO THE $900.00 AND UNDER BIKES THAT THE AVERAGE JOE LIKE MYSELF CAN AFFORD WITHOUT HAVING THE MRS THROW A FIT FOR THE REST OF HIS/MY LIFE.
RIGHT NOW MY FAVORITE RIDE IS A BEAT-UP 1995 SPECIALIZED ROCKHOPPER THAT HAS GONE THROUGH MANY MODIFICATIONS THAT INCLUDES TITANIUM PARTS AND BOLTS THAT I'VE FOUND IN SWAP MEETS OR IN THE BACK ROOMS OF BIKE SHOPS. IT WEIGHS AS MUCH AS THAT P-23 NOW. IT CAN DO AS MUCH AS THAT $4000.00 BIKE BUT I WON'T DROP 25 FEET ON IT. BEING MARRIED AND RESPONSIBLE KIND OF KEEPS A GUY FROM DOING CRAZY THINGS LIKE THAT. MAYBE.
THE OTHER BIKES I OWN ARE 2 1992 SCOTT UNITRACKS,ONE OF THEM A FORMER SWISS WORLD CUP DOWNHILLER ONCE RACED BY THOMAS FRISCHKNACHT(GOD I HOPE I GOT THAT RIGHT).I ALSO HAVE A 1988 SPECIALIZED ROCKCOMBO,HALF ATB,HALF CRIT BIKE AND IT'S REALLY FAST AND REALLY RARE. IT'S CALLED THE 'WAYBACK MACHINE'.
I JUST BUILT UP A FORMER HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT RALEIGH F-500 INTO A LIGHTWEIGHT XC RACER.IT STILL HAS THE POLICE DECALS.
I'M CURRENTLY RESTORING ONE OF THE SCOTTS AND A 1999 SPECIALIZED GROUND CONTROL FSR,THE ONE WITH THE CRAZY RED/YELLOW PAINT SCHEME. I HAVE A SPARE ROCKHOPPER FRAME AND I STILL HAVE MY '1ST' RACE BIKE,A 1989 MONGOOSE IBOC PRO THAT I RACED MY FIRST RACE ON AT THE 1ST SIZZLER MOUNTAIN BIKE CLASSIC HELD IN AUGUST 1989. STILL HAVE THE RACEDAY SHIRT TOO WHICH,BY THE WAY I CAN STILL WEAR.
I'M MARRIED TO A GREAT WIFE WHO SUPPORTS MY SPORT.I WORK FULL TIME AND I HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES BUT I STILL MAKE TIME FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING. WHEN I'M NOT RIDING THE TRAILS,I'M WORKING ON ONE OF MY BIKES IN THE BATCAVE.I RESTORE THE OLD BIKES AS A HOBBY.I RIDE AND OWN FULL SUSPENSION,HARDTAILS AND RIGIDS SO I'M NOT BIASED.KINDA .THE HARDTAIL STILL RULES.
THE FIRST MOUNTAIN BIKE I RODE WAS A THEN NEW 1987 NISHIKI ARIEL THAT BELONGED TO MY COUSIN FLOYD. I REMEMBER TELLING HIM THAT MOUNTAIN BIKING WAS A FAD.
MY OLD BIKES ARE STILL RIDDEN THE WAY THEY WERE INTENDED,OFFROAD! AND THEY HAVE THE SCARS TO PROVE IT.I DRIVE TO WORK AND THE TRAILS NOW. THAT WAY,MY BIKES ALMOST NEVER SEE PAVEMENT. DIRT IS WHAT THEY TOUCH NOW.NICE RED CLAY FROM GRANT RANCH.
ONE OF THESE DAYS I WILL PLUNK DOWN FOR A BIG-HIT BIKE BUT FOR NOW,I'M STAYING WITH THE TRUSTED DIAMOND FRAMED WONDERS FROM BACK IN THE DAY.
THAT'S SOME FAD EH?

PEACE
